Visual Prayer Journal Prompt: Called
Mountain with Many Paths
Many people wrestle with the question of life’s purpose, often quietly and over many years. For a long time, that search can be driven by personal ambition or a narrow view of faith and the world. But everything begins to shift when we stop fixating on a specific vocation and instead pursue a deeper, lasting vision.
A vision is like a mountain in the distance, anchoring, constant, and clear, while vocations are the many paths that can lead us there. Some trails may be steep, others winding, and we may switch routes along the way, but the destination remains the same.
Unlike specific roles or job titles, a vision isn't confined by circumstance; it focuses on who we are meant to become. And when we live from that place, we find freedom, meaning, and purpose that transcend any single season or vocation.

Many Paths
A clear vision gives a person flexibility. It isn’t bound to a single job, title, or stage of life. Instead, they can carry that vision into almost any vocation because it means they come with a mission. They’re not limited by a role or a label; instead, they have the freedom to shape the path they walk, rather than be defined by it.
A vision is like a distant mountain, steady, unmistakable, and enduring, while vocations are the many available paths that lead us toward it. With this kind of vision, countless paths open up, allowing us to carry a meaningful mission into various roles without being limited by specific titles or labels.
But, even human insight tells us we need a transcendent purpose in our vision, something greater than our circumstances. Without that, life feels unanchored and aimless.
Jesus alone offers that transcendent meaning. And He’s not just part of the vision; He’s the source of it. He created you, gifted you, and calls you into a life shaped by His purpose. When your eyes are on Him, your path is no longer about chasing what fades, but living with eternal purpose and secure hope in His story.
Scripture
Romans 12:2 (ESV)
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Psalm 138:8 (ESV)
"The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
2 Timothy 1:9 (ESV):
“[God] who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”
Quote
“No task will be so sordid and base, provided you obey your calling in it, that it will not shine and be reckoned very precious in God’s sight"
John Calvin

Humanity
In their influential 2012 study, psychologists Bryan Dik and Ryan Duffy analyzed several career-calling frameworks and found that perceiving a calling; defined as a transcendent summons toward purpose, was a stronger predictor of job satisfaction, life engagement, and personal fulfillment than simply identifying with a job title or vocation.

Helping Find Your Vision
Our interests, gifts, and skills are blessings, good gifts from God. But don’t forget: they’re not the point. They’re tools and glimpses of His goodness, given for us to enjoy and to use in reflecting Him. So may we always shape our sense of calling and purpose around the greatest gift, Christ Himself.
